Google AI Max Has Landed (a Bit Early!)

At Google Marketing Live 2025, it was announced that AI Max would roll out globally in early Q3.

Naturally, here at Lighthouse, we began preparing for what Google describes as a new era of “keywordless search” in Google Ads.

This concept has certainly stirred discussions and raised concerns among advertisers and clients alike.

We conducted thorough research to better understand and prepare for this shift. Google recommends implementing the "Power Pack", comprising Performance Max, Demand Gen, and the newly introduced AI Max, to achieve optimal results. This necessitates revisiting and realigning campaign structures.

However, we were caught off guard when AI Max became available earlier than expected, last Friday, June 27th, in some of our clients' Google Ads accounts.

Based on Google's recommendations, we've initiated A/B testing of campaigns and are closely monitoring the performance and outcomes of this new Search Ads approach.

A Brief Overview: What Does “Keywordless Search” Mean for Our Ads?
  • Search Term Matching: Expands reach beyond existing keywords by utilizing broad match and keywordless targeting to identify relevant, high-performing search queries.
  • Text Customization: Automatically generates ad headlines and descriptions based on your website content and existing ads, tailoring messages to user intent.
  • Final URL Expansion: Directs users to the most relevant landing page on your site, enhancing user experience and potential for conversion.

Our Preparatory Steps Include:
  • Implementing Negative Keyword Lists: Regularly updating negative keywords to prevent ads from appearing for irrelevant or low-performing search queries.
  • Enhancing Landing Page Quality: Ensuring landing pages are well-structured, relevant, and aligned with ad content to improve user experience and Quality Score.
  • Utilizing Smart Bidding Strategies: Employing Smart Bidding options, such as Maximize Conversions or Target ROAS, to optimize bids through machine learning.
  • Organizing Thematic Ad Groups: Structuring ad groups around specific themes or product categories to provide clear signals to AI Max for improved ad targeting.
  • Diversifying Ad Assets: Providing a variety of headlines and descriptions to enable AI Max to generate relevant ad creatives effectively.
  • Setting Up Brand Controls: Defining brand inclusions or exclusions at the campaign or ad group level to ensure ads appear alongside appropriate brand content.
  • Monitoring Search Term Reports: Regularly reviewing search term reports to understand which queries are triggering ads and refining keyword strategies accordingly.
  • Conducting A/B Testing: Utilizing drafts and experiments to test AI Max features against current campaign settings, facilitating data-driven decisions.
  • Ensuring Accurate Conversion Tracking: Implementing robust conversion tracking to provide AI Max with reliable data for performance optimization.

We will continue to share our findings and insights as we navigate this transition.
